Je Suis Charlie

Hi Mom and Dad,

I'm sure you've heard about the terrible shooting at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, so I wanted to write to tell you that I am okay and not to worry. My apartment is a considerable distance away from the office so I was and am safe.

Essentially, this satirical, french magazine by the name of Charlie Hebdo was the victim of a terrorist attack. Two gunmen from a town a little ways outside of Paris took offense to a cartoon the magazine posted. They forced their way into the Paris headquarters and opened fire, killing twelve people including two police officers and wounding eleven, four of which were serious. The two men claimed to be avenging the Prophet Muhammad. The reason they took offense to a cartoon is because there were numerous cartoons the magazine depicted the Muhammad. As you are probably aware, in Islamic religion, depictions of the prophet Muhammad are sacrilegious.

In no way do I believe the extremists were right in their killing of twelve people. There is no justification for murder in any case, and especially this one. Legally, yes, the magazine did have the right to publish what they want without being forced to conform the the laws of any religion. And legally, they were protected by their right to freedom of speech. However just because you can do something, doesn't mean, morally and ethically, you should. The executive editor of The New York Times, Dean Baquet, made a good point when explaining why the paper would not be printing the images. “We have a standard that is long held and that serves us well: that there is a line between gratuitous insult and satire. Most of these are gratuitous insult.” He said that he wanted to be sensitive to the paper's muslim readers. Personally I believe this is the right position. There is a fine line between satire and a gratuitous insult, and this is a gratuitous insult. The paper shouldn't have posted something so needlessly rude, offensive, and inconsiderate. Once again I in no was agree with the extremists reaction, however the magazine was wrong to begin with.

Lots of Love,
Hayley
